Dr. Shiv Jindal Kidney Disease Prevention Research Fund

Dr. Shiv L. Jindal, a physician in the Division of Nephrology at The Ottawa Hospital and a pioneer in the care of kidney patients for the last 40 years, is spearheading an ambitious fundraising effort to raise $2 million between now and the Fall of 2008 to set up a revolutionary new program in kidney disease prevention.

Dr. Jindal has done an amazing thing: he has generously donated $1 million to get us halfway to our fundraising goal.

Dr. Jindal and The Ottawa Hospital are now looking to our community to raise the remaining $1 million and make this important program a reality.

What is it?

The Kidney Disease Prevention Research Program will operate through the Kidney Research Centre, a state-of-the-art, 15,000 square-foot laboratory affiliated with The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa.

Over the last several years, there has been an alarming increase in the number of patients suffering from kidney disease. Today, The Ottawa Hospital cares for more than 800 patients a year on dialysis compared with 120 patients just 20 years ago. With more than 30,000 Canadians suffering from end-stage renal disease and more than 500,000 Canadians with stage III kidney disease, it is no exaggeration to describe this as a health care crisis.

This will be the first program of its kind in Canada devoted to research on the prevention of kidney disease. The program will:

  • Ensure patients diagnosed in the early stages of kidney disease have a better chance of avoiding end-stage renal disease;
  • Reduce the increasing rate of incidents of patients requiring kidney replacement therapy;
  • Enable patients with a family history of kidney disease access to programs and information to educate their children and grandchildren on the risk factors associated with the disease, and;
  • Encourage patient involvement in clinical research right here in Ottawa.
