General Campus Emergency Department

The Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus Emergency Department provides 24-hour emergency diagnostics, assessment and care services to approximately 160 patients a day. The current facility is cramped and outdated; the lack of privacy and space has become a serious issue. It is urgently in need of an expansion and a massive renovation to provide the highest quality patient care to our community.

The issue

  • The ER faces increased pressure as it copes with a growing and aging population, and more patients with complex illnesses. As the General Campus continues to upgrade its facilities (new Critical Care Wing, expanded Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre), the ER is directly affected by the resulting increase in patients.
  • Outdated equipment and cramped facilities hamper the Hospital's ability to provide the best possible care in an emergency.
  • Cancer connection: Cancer patients often have suppressed immune systems that make them susceptible to sepsis (blood poisoning) and other illnesses. Its proximity to The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre means that the General Campus ER treats the majority of cancer patients needing acute emergency care.

The solution

  • A $47-million renovation project to double the capacity.

Expected benefits

  • Quiet, restful space: The new ER will have more treatment rooms and larger bed bays to provide patients with the privacy and comfort they need.
  • Private waiting rooms: The space will have four family quiet rooms (up from the current one), as well as a special separate area for cancer patients experiencing complications.
  • State-of-the-art equipment: The latest tools and resources will help staff treat more patients and provide the very best lifesaving care.
  • Better infection control: New reverse airflow isolation rooms will help prevent the spread of infection and disease.

This capital expansion project will cost a total of $47 million. The Government of Ontario is covering most of the cost of the expansion; we are reaching out to our community to help raise the remaining $10 million. To encourage community support, every dollar you donate will trigger a government contribution of $3.70—turning every dollar into a $4.70 investment!
