Civic Campus - MRI
The issue
- The Ottawa Hospital performs 25,000 scans every year on two
MRI machines.
- Demand for scans far outweighs the Hospital’s capacity;
as a result, waiting lists are now 18 months or more for many
patients.
- With an aging population and a growing community, we must ensure
that The Ottawa Hospital can meet current and future need.
The solution
- The Government of Ontario has approved operational funding for
a state-of-the-art 3-Tesla MRI at the Hospital’s Civic Campus.
- The purchase of the MRI and construction of the required facility
to house it will cost $6 million.
- It is slated for installation by the end of 2008.
Expected benefits
- Shorter wait times: 4,000 additional scans will be performed
every year.
- The new equipment can perform scans much quicker.
- Leading-edge MRI can produce higher quality images to detect
problems much sooner. This will improve treatment options for
patients and provide peace of mind to patients and their families.
- Allows the Hospital to teach medical students and residents
in a state-of-the-art environment, which helps to train the best
medical professionals.
- Allows the Hospital to attract and retain the best medical
staff.
The Ontario government has committed $1.2 million in operating
funding for the new MRI; our community is asked to contribute $6
million to help purchase and install the equipment.
