The Ottawa Hospital and Boston Pizza to help teens P.A.R.T.Y.
safely
Ottawa, April 20, 2006 – The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) emergency
room staff will stage a mock trauma at 11:30 a.m. today at the Civic
Campus at the unveiling of a new partnership with local Boston Pizza
restaurants.
The exercise is part of P.A.R.T.Y. or Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related
Trauma in Youth, a day-long session during which area high-school
students spend the day at TOH to learn about injury prevention and
how they can make better choices to keep themselves and their friends
and family safe.
Under this new partnership, Boston Pizza will provide lunch for
participants at every P.A.R.T.Y. program session. This year-long
sponsorship is valued at $9,400.
“Both of my children participated in the program and I saw
how it positively affected them,” said Charlie Saikeley, owner
of the two of the seven Boston Pizza franchises in the Ottawa area.
“This important initiative certainly deserves our community’s
support.”
As well, local Boston Pizza restaurants will launch a Fundraising
Rebate Program for all Ottawa Hospital staff, patients and the community.
Patrons will be able to have Boston Pizza donate 10 per cent the
cost of their meal back to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. Restaurant
patrons are asked to keep their receipts and drop them off at any
of our campuses or mail them to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation,
737 Parkdale Avenue, 1st floor, K1Y 1J8. The funds raised will be
used to purchase equipment for TOH emergency departments.
“Most people think that injury is the result of accidents
or a totally unpredictable event over which they have little or
no control,“ said Dr. Jean-Denis Yelle, Medical Director of
the Trauma Service. “But the fact is that up to 90 per cent
of injury is the result of predictable and preventable events, we
just want to give young people the tools to make the decisions that
keep them safe.”
TOH Trauma Services provides comprehensive quality care to injured
patients. As the tertiary trauma centre for Eastern Ontario, the
department is committed to excellence in compassionate, patient-centred
care. As well, the TOH Trauma Services provides medical education
and does critical research into the treatment of trauma. Educational
programs like P.A.R.T.Y. are part of TOH Trauma Services mission
to educate and prevent injuries in the general public.
