Ottawa Hospital Foundation Reaches $80-Million Mark of its Legacy
Campaign
(OTTAWA, ONTARIO) – The Ottawa Hospital
Foundation today announced that it has reached the $80-million mark
of its five-year, $100-million Legacy Campaign. The announcement
was made during the Foundation’s fourth annual President’s
Report to the Community, at the Westin Hotel.
The breakfast event allows leaders from The Ottawa Hospital, the
Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the Foundation to report
back to the community on the past year’s achievements and
future plans for health care.
Other highlights from 2005-06: the Foundation had more than 28,000
donors, the highest number on record; and it received more than
$3 million in bequests, including two million-dollar estates. Community
donations helped support several new projects, including the new
Critical Care Wing under construction at the Hospital’s General
Campus, and the nearly complete Emergency Department expansion at
the Civic Campus.
“The upgrades you are seeing at all three campuses of the
Hospital are built with concrete and steel, but they rest on the
foundation of a generous and caring community,” said Susan
Doyle, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. “Your
donations are helping ensure that your loved ones will have access
to the very best care when they need it most.”
Other speakers included Dr. Jack Kitts, President and CEO of The
Ottawa Hospital, and Dr. Ron Worton, the OHRI’s CEO and Scientific
Director. Dr. Worton spoke about the breakthrough research by scientists
studying diabetes, stem cells and cancer, including clinical trials
of a ‘smart’ drug that causes cancer cells to self-destruct.
Dr. Ilias Cagiannos, Surgical Oncologist in the Division of Urology
at The Ottawa Hospital, spoke about the new Cancer Assessment Centre,
slated to open this summer at the Hospital’s General Campus,
which will soon revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of patients
in our community.
The Foundation also handed out awards to some volunteers and donors
for their outstanding contributions. Volunteer of the Year went
to Ken Evans, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors
and long-time supporter of the Foundation. Philanthropic Group of
the Year was awarded to the Everest Select Initiatives Group, which
has pledged $500,000 toward the new Centre for Stem Cell and Gene
Therapy. The Inspiration Award was given to former Ottawa mayor
Jacquelin Holzman and her daughter, Ellyn, for, among other things,
their fundraising efforts during Ottawa Race Weekend, which total
more than $150,000 since 1998.
The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is a multi-campus, academic
health sciences centre, serving 1.5 million residents of Ottawa
