Unique, Popular Fundraiser Brings in Record $80,000 for Rehabilitation Centre

(OTTAWA, ONTARIO) – Close to 800 people joined the Ottawa Senators Alumni and The Ottawa Hospital Foundation this evening for “HOPE & HEROES”. This unique fundraiser, held at the Westin Hotel, supports The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, the region’s leading centre for physical rehabilitation services. Proceeds from the event will go to help expand and improve the Centre’s brain injury rehabilitation program.

As part of the evening, the Ottawa Senators Alumni and the Rehabilitation Centre presented awards and scholarships. The Alumni offered scholarships to young promising individuals and presented the 7th Man Award to long-time community volunteer Sandra Childs. Ms. Childs has been an active organizer and volunteer in several local sports and recreation leagues for more than 25 years.

Other award recipients include Monica Elaine Campbell, who accepted The Rehabilitation Centre Individual Achievement Award for her tireless efforts to break down barriers for the deaf and hard of hearing. And Ottawa Senators player Mike Fisher received the Alumni’s Player of the Year award for his outstanding community work for a wide variety of charitable causes.

“We are thrilled and proud to once again be involved in this event, which continues to raise important funds in support of The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre and gives hope to everyone in our community who relies on its services,” said Brad Marsh, President of the Ottawa Senators Alumni. The Ottawa Senators Alumni has made a long-term pledge to raise $250,000 for the Rehabilitation Centre, the most significant charitable commitment the Alumni has ever made.

The Centre’s brain injury rehabilitation program is currently housed in two separate, aging facilities. The funds raised this evening will help the Centre consolidate and expand this program by upgrading its facilities and buying new equipment.

“This year in our community, hundreds of people will need intensive rehabilitation services following a traumatic brain injury,” said Cathy Danbrook, Vice-President, Rehabilitation Services, of The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre. “We are so grateful to everyone who attends this fundraising event, and for the ongoing support of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation and the Ottawa Senators Alumni to ensure we can provide the best of care when people need us.”

Among the highlights of the evening was a performance by award-winning Canadian comedian Ron James. Mr. James has appeared at major comedy festivals across Canada, and is known for his roles in the CBC comedies Blackfly and Made in Canada.

“HOPE & HEROES” is made possible thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, including our Title Sponsor Scotiabank Group. The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre specializes in the physical rehabilitation of adults who have experienced a disabling physical illness or injury. The Ottawa Senators Alumni was established in 1992. This 41-member group of former NHL hockey players has raised close to $1 million and given many hours of their time to local charity events. Their main fundraising events are: CPA/Ottawa Senators Alumni Wheelchair Relay, ABI/Ottawa Senators Alumni Charity Golf Tournament, the ESSO 3-on-3 Hockey Classic and, of course, Scotiabank Group’s “HOPE & HEROES”.
