Unique Fundraiser Draws Former NHL Greats, Community Leaders to Support Rehabilitation Centre

(OTTAWA, ONTARIO) - Close to 700 people joined The Ottawa Senators Alumni and The Ottawa Hospital Foundation at the Westin Hotel this evening for “HOPE & HEROES”, a unique fundraiser to support The Rehabilitation Centre (TRC). The event is expected to raise approximately $40,000 to help expand and improve the brain injury rehabilitation program at TRC.

As part of the evening, the Ottawa Senators Alumni and The Rehabilitation Centre presented awards and scholarships. The Alumni offered scholarships to young promising individuals and honoured Cyril Leeder, Chief Operating Officer for the Corel Centre and the Ottawa Senators, for his community involvement. TRC also honoured a few individuals, including The Rehabilitation Centre Achievement Award recipient Donald Stinson, a community activist who raises funds for many non-profit organizations across the city.

“We are proud to team up once again with The Ottawa Hospital Foundation to support The Rehabilitation Centre in its important work to help adults regain their independence after an illness or injury,” said Brad Marsh, President of the Ottawa Senators Alumni. In 2004, the Ottawa Senators Alumni made a long-term pledge to raise $250,000 for The Rehabilitation Centre, the most significant charitable commitment the Alumni has ever made.

TRC’s brain injury rehabilitation program is currently housed in two separate, aging facilities. The funds raised this evening will help TRC to consolidate and expand this program by upgrading its facilities and buying new equipment.

“Every year, hundreds of people in Ottawa require intensive rehabilitation services due to a traumatic brain injury,” said Cathy Danbrook, Chief Executive Officer of The Rehabilitation Centre. “We are extremely thankful to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation and the Ottawa Senators Alumni for hosting this fun event that makes a real difference for people in our community.”

The evening ended with a performance by Derek Edwards (voted Best Male Stand-Up Comedian at the 2004 Canadian Comedy Awards).

“HOPE & HEROES” is made possible thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, including our Title Sponsor Scotiabank Group.

The Rehabilitation Centre specializes in the physical rehabilitation of adults who have experienced a disabling physical illness or injury. For more information, visit www.rehab.on.ca.
